Kruse: Update on Darfur divestment will highlight committee meeting
Pension Management Oversight Commission to hear from PERF general counsel

STATEHOUSE – State Sen. Dennis Kruse – who steered legislation earlier this year prohibiting the Public Employees Retirement Fund (PERF) and the Teachers Retirement Fund (TRF) from continuing investment with companies doing business in Sudan – is eager to hear the impact this new law has had since it took effect July 1.

A status report on the implementation of that law will highlight Wednesday’s 1 p.m. meeting of the Pension Management Oversight Commission. The meeting will be held in Room 233 of the Statehouse.

Andrea D.B. Unzicker, the general counsel of  PERF, is scheduled to speak to the commission on this issue.

“I’m hopeful there has been some immediate impact,” Kruse said. “The hard work of many people has helped make Indiana a leader on this issue. If it’s shown we are making a difference, perhaps other states will follow our example.”

Indiana became the ninth state to divest from companies with Sudan dealings when the legislation was passed in April.
