(STATEHOUSE)– A bill co-authored by Senator Marvin Riegsecker (R-Goshen) that will help the RV industry in Indiana passed the Senate today by a vote of 49-1.
Senate Bill 106 exempts out-of-state citizens from paying Indiana sales tax on cargo trailers or RVs bought in Indiana .
“Double-taxing customers was causing business and businesses to leave Indiana ,” Riegsecker says. “This simple move will keep the RV sales and manufacturing industry in Indiana alive.”
Several RV dealership owners testified in the Senate Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee that out-of-state business has dropped because of Indiana 's taxing policies. One dealer whose business is on the Indiana/Ohio border explained that he opened a dealership in Ohio because Ohio residents didn't want to come to Indiana to buy an RV.
“The RV industry is vital to Northern Indiana 's economic future,” Riegsecker said. “I don't want any laws on the book that may jeopardize this important part of our economy.”
The measure now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration. Riegsecker represents Senate District 12, which includes most of Elkhart County .
