Schools and community organizations play an important role in helping Scholars meet their Scholarship requirements, graduate from high school and guide their transition to college.
To qualify for their 21st Century Scholarship, Scholars must submit an affirmation form by March 10 of their senior year of high school. The affirmation confirms that students have fulfilled all the requirements of the Scholar Pledge, and agree to file their FAFSA by March 10 and apply to an eligible Indiana college.
Complete the Senior Affirmation Form
Scholars’ affirmation forms may be completed and submitted online or a PDF of the affirmation can be printed off and returned via mail by March 10 of the student’s senior year of high school. For current seniors (class of 2014), the online and PDF versions of the affirmation forms will be available November 1, 2013 and posted on this page.
Scholars who miss the March 10 deadline may submit an appeal if they believe they have special circumstances.
Host a Scholar Celebration Event
Local schools and communities are encouraged to host Scholar Celebration events that congratulate Scholars for graduating from high school and provide important information designed to help Scholars transition successfully to college. Schools and community organizations may create these events for Scholars using the resources provided by the Scholars program.
Scholars who are unable to attend a Scholar Celebration event can view the senior affirmation form online and verify that they understand the information.
To receive the 21st Century Scholarship, you must enroll in college within one year after graduating from high school. (For example, students graduating in May 2014 must enroll in college by fall 2015.) Regardless of when Scholars enroll they must apply to and be accepted to at least one eligible Indiana college during your senior year of high school. For more details on enrollment, receiving the Scholarship and other related questions, please browse our FAQs.
Completing the Scholar Success Program
Starting in fall 2013, students who start high school in the fall of 2013 or later must complete the Scholar Success Program in order to earn the 21st Century Scholarship. Scholars in previous classes are not required to complete the Scholar Success Program, but Indiana all students are strongly encouraged to take these specific steps to plan, prepare and pay for education beyond high school.
Keeping the Scholar Pledge
High school seniors must complete all the requirements of the Scholar Pledge. The Pledge specifically requires seniors to:
- Apply to college: Scholars must apply to at least one eligible Indiana college. It is recommended that you to apply to at least one school you are not sure will grant you admission, one you are pretty confident will accept your application and one that you are positive will accept your application. If application fees are a barrier to applying, ask the colleges’ financial aid offices about fee waivers for 21st Century Scholars. Many Indiana colleges will allow Scholars to apply for free.
- File the FAFSA: You must file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by Indiana’s March 10 deadline and make any corrections by May 15. You must also file any additional financial aid paperwork requested by your college. Help with the FAFSA and other financial aid questions is available from Learn More Indiana’s Cash for College campaign.
- Submit an affirmation: Scholars must complete and submit an affirmation form before the March 10 deadline that confirms that all requirements of the Scholar Pledge have been met. Scholars may also affirm their status by viewing the a senior affirmation presentation—which will be available on this webpage on November 1, 2013—and either completing the online affirmation form or submitting a paper copy of the affirmation form and mailing it into the State 21st Century Scholars Office. The online affirmation form and a PDF of the paper affirmation form will be available on this webpage on November 1, 2013.
Scholars who miss deadlines or otherwise fail to fulfill their pledges have the right to submit an appeal. Keeping your information up-to-date is important since the 21st Century Scholars Program may mail you important updates. Update your information online here.
