Jake Jaworski is almost finished with the second leg of his college journey: a master’s degree at Indiana University-Purdue at Indianapolis (IUPUI) in the heart of Indiana’s capital city. He says the 21st Century Scholarship opened up the college possibilities for him as a high school student, allowing him to consider private institutions such as Wabash College, where he earned his undergraduate degree.
“The 21st Century Scholarship helped me focus on my schoolwork instead of worrying about paying for college,” says Jake. “Even in high school, it helped me stay diligent and focused.”
Although the 21st Century Scholarship didn’t cover all of Jake’s tuition and fees, it combined with other scholarships, grants and loans from the college and the government to cover his costs. Jake says the unique atmosphere of Wabash College and its strong educational focus drew him to choose the college even though the initial tuition price appeared out of reach.
All along, Jake has used internships, student organizations and volunteering to help him hone his interests and decide on a career direction. Currently, he’s an intern at Learn More Indiana. He helps the organization get the word out about the importance of college. Through Jake’s work at events, in planning communication strategies and in using social media, students of all ages across the state have learned about planning for college. Jake’s political and social interests have also been piqued by involvement in College Republicans and interning and volunteering at a homeless shelter in Indianapolis.
